Not the ‘comparing’ kind but a green computer security kind. Typically, PCs are switched on for much longer than they are needed – when employees go to meetings, go to lunch, etc. MeerCat is a simple device that recognises when the PC user is no longer in the vicinity and puts the computer into security mode (so no-one else can access confidential data) and also puts the computer into energy saving mode (so it saves on energy bills and CO2 emissions).
Users can see at a glance how much energy and CO2 they are saving when they use the MeerCat – so the benefits are very easily trackable. Click MeerCat from 24/7 Uptime to find out more.

When we attended the May Day Summit earlier this year, all companies were encouraged to commit in some way to trying to reduce their CO2 emissions. We were a little hesitant to bite off more than we could chew but, once we got started, found it easier than we thought and went for some quick wins. (more…)

According to the Environmental Audit Committee, the Government’s use of IT systems is one of the main reasons given for the failure to meet its own targets for reducing carbon emissions. Electricity use is increasing, largely due to the number of Government computers, printers, laptops et al. (more…)

I’m learning more about the CRC legislation that comes into effect next year and it’s sounding like a rather expensive undertaking for business so far. From what I can gather, and in very simple terms, organisations within the scope of this legislation will initially need to buy allowances (emission credits) from the Government at a cost of £12/tonne of CO2 produced. (more…)

Cutting carbon emissions saves money, as we have posted on this blog on numerous occasions. By virtualising, consolidating and centralising IT provisions, companies can save thousands of pounds every year in energy bills and many, many tonnes of CO2 emissions. But now there is even more of an incentive for businesses in the UK’s North West to go green in the IT department. (more…)

The current global economic recession has squeezed IT budgets, hindered capital expenditure and generally slowed the growth of IT development. However Green IT is gaining an upside in the economic downturn, according to a report just published by independent market analyst Datamonitor, “Can Green IT Bloom in an Economic Downturn.” (more…)
