Green IT: 24/7 uptime is great; reduced energy costs even better
Some interesting information from Springboard Research / Computerworld last week: less than 10% of Asia Pacific firms have formally implemented a green IT strategy – yet 60% plan to do so during the next 2 years and almost one third say that the economic crisis will actually accelerate implementation.
While the companies understand that social responsibility and business advantages are great reasons for going green, it is actually the reduction in energy costs that is viewed as their prime motivator. The surveyed firms in greater China, India, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia plan to focus on energy-efficient PCs, servers and storage systems, with the largest percentage investing in virtualisation (whether for server, storage or desktop).
Jonathan Silber at Springboard Research confirms: “The good news is that both in spite of, and because of, the economic crisis, a considerable number of companies are recognising the value and payback of Green IT initiatives.”
Yet more food for thought.
