Don’t trust memory sticks alone for essential data backup
Memory sticks are great for swapping files between PCs, occasional backups but not as part of your regular backup strategy. Do bear in mind:
There are different types of memory stick available – some are slower than others; some have less powerful memory cells so are not as reliable.
All memory sticks have a limited life span in terms of the number of reads/writes they perform. Whilst they may be capable of storing lots of information, there is no way of knowing when the memory stick will reach its limit and fail. You really don’t want to find this out when you desperately need to restore a file from it.
Memory sticks are very small and easy to lose – not ideal if this is your main means of backing up your systems.
There is no automated backup system with a memory stick – so do you remember to backup regularly?
Find an additional means of off-site backup as well as a memory stick – a belt and braces approach means a much better result for your business.
